At the new firm, lo and behold, there are a few of us knitters! (can you imagine 3 ladies knitting in a lunchroom?? LOL) Who would have thunk? A woman was trying for the first time “knitting on 3” (like how you would knit a sock) and I did a teaching class with her and another woman watching (for her own reference later, lol).
One thing I would love to do is this:
Find a school (inner city school would be best), grade 4 or 5 kids, where I get some fatter short needles and yarn for each child in the class, and teach them how to make a scarf for themselves. Wouldn’t that be cool?
In the meantime, I just keep knitting up scarves to give to the school for them to distribute to the needy ones. Not near as fulfilling, but it does something to help out.
I think that's a wonderful idea. And so much better than trying to teach an 80 year old how to knit.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago I accompanied my grandmother to a knitting session at church that was organized by one of her friends. The plan was to knit up scarves (which would then be blessed) for ill people in the community.
The room was full of 70 to 90 year old women. Many of them already knew how to knit and were chatting away as their needles flashed.
However, my grandmother had never done it before... She's this incredibly strong independent person... and to see her sitting their struggling to guide those needles just wrung my heart. It just wasn't possible for her to learn at that age. Eventually she gave up and I could tell how bad she felt.
(I personally thought it was cruel of the friend to try and teach these old people something like that - my grandmother wasn't the only one who left with a defeated attitude)
So yes, teach the young ones :) they'll pick it up in a flash! x
